At Buffalo Pass Farm, we're proud to feed our community absolutely chemical free non-gmo veggies! We use regenerative farming practices to ensure that our crops are healthy and free from harmful chemicals.
It's a little known industry secret that organic labeling now allows for the use of certain chemical pesticides and herbicides. Because the chemicals are derived from a plant, they get a pass, but they are still nasty chemicals. We feel this is a travesty and never, ever use chemical treatments! While you are supposed to be certified to call yourself organic, you can do the math :-)
We spend quite a bit of time on improving the health of our soil. Our primary focus is on improving the soil's microbiome. Put simply, the microbiome facilitates the transfer of nutrients between the soil and plants. We love to geek out and look at the soil under a microscope to see all the fungal hyphae, amoebocytes, nematodes and other little critters that bring our soil alive. Our composting system creates 8 to 10 yards of compost every year. We apply this directly to the soil a couple times each season and use it to make compost tea which we apply to the rows every other week or so. All this attention to the soil brings you the highly nutrient dense produce you enjoy every week!
